Delay is one of the most common effects used in music productions and audio recordings. A delay unit works by recording an input signal and then playing it back after very short periods, thus creating an echo effect easily recognizable by most listeners. But delay can be deployed for much more than creating an echo. The effect can be used subtly to add more liveliness to certain instruments or vocals, while greater amounts of delay can completely change the way your track sounds.

Any digital audio workstation comes with at least a basic delay unit, but if you want to do more with this effect, then you might need a dedicated plugin. One viable solution is a piece of software called MFM2, which stands for More Feedback Machine 2. Created by u-he, the plugin comes with four delay lines which can be routed in many different and creative ways. You can select different feedback modes, such as Dual Pingpong, Quad Pingpong, Quad Permute, or Quard Network.

Apart from the obvious delay functions, you can add various effects on two channels, use four low-frequency oscillators, add envelopes, or even play with the delay effect using keys. MFM2 also comes with many presets that can help you get started.
