Sometimes, you don’t need any background music, but would be very grateful to just hear some ambient sounds. There was a time when you could find CDs with hour-long recordings of forest or beach soundscapes; now you can find such beautiful recordings all over the Internet, either on media hosting platforms or as audio files which you can download.
However, when it comes to listening to ambient sounds, few free programs can offer you as many possibilities as Soundscape Generator.
The app’s name can be a bit misleading, as Soundscape Generator doesn’t actually generate any sounds by itself. Instead, it allows you to mix more recordings in order to create your own soundscape. The program features eight channels, and on each of them you can load one or more audio files (only WAV and MP3 are supported).
You can listen to them just by using one channel, as the application will play them randomly. However, if you want to really test Soundscape Generator’s might, you’re better off loading just one sample into each channel.
You’ve probably realized by now that the program can actually play eight audio files simultaneously, but don’t expect this to turn into a cacophony easily. From the program’s main interface, you can adjust volume and frequency for each channel, while also panning them to the left or right. Now, in this case, frequency doesn’t adjust the sound’s pitch, but the frequency with which the audio file is played. If you turn down the frequency, a recording will be repeated less often.
Imagine you are trying to recreate a forest just through sound; one channel should obviously be the wind rustling through the trees and the second one could be a creek. You could let these play continuously, even on loop, but other sounds like birds chirping, stronger gusts of wind or other animal noises should be played less often, and maybe panned left or right, in order to make it seem like the sound surrounds you environment.
This of course, is just a small example of the ambience you can create with Soundscape Generator. Your only task now is to proper high-quality audio recordings.
