MouSing

Now that a computer is found in nearly all domains of activity, it has become a multifunctional processing, and building tool even for music. You can hook up a variety of instruments in order to record sound, or use other specialized application to produce audio, just like MouSing, which only requires a mouse.

The application’s main window is where everything is performed, from playing, to recording, to saving. What’s more there are several ways through which to generate sound, each giving you the option to generate a different kind of audio file. Controls are pretty intuitive, and real time feedback make sure you know what’s going on, but there’s also a help manual to get you out of sticky situations.

How the application works is by making the whole screen an interactive instrument, and almost every position on your screen generates sound. Frequency gets higher as you move your cursor to the right side of the screen, while the vertical axis represents sound, meaning you don’t hear anything from the taskbar area, while the upper side is for maximum decibels.

All of these values are shown in the status bar, and they update with every pixel the mouse follows. Depending on the tab you’re in, like Wave, Midi, or DirectSound, you get to manage sets of sliders for volume, pitch, vibrato, timbre, pitch bend, Midi instrument, and a few more.

By default, hitting the play button lets you get familiar with the whole process, which can be quite fun at first. However, choosing to create a new item from the file menu switches to the recorder component, and instead of a play button, you directly capture sound, and export afterwards to WAV, or MID.

Sound is a pretty important feature of the computer, used in music, movies, video games, and even applications for alerts. With MouSing, you might not be able to create complex works of art, but it provides enough variety to let you record neat sound effects to use in different projects. No experience is required, with the only necessary instrument being your mouse.
