Windows comes with integrated volume control options and keyboards usually come with their own buttons for adjusting the sound volume. But if you want a bit more than that, a dedicated application such as SimpleSndVol might be the way to go.

This particular application is one of those lightweight freebies you might be glad to have around. SimpleSndVol sits quietly in the system tray and waits for your actions. You can find its icon near the clock in the Windows taskbar.

SimpleSndVol’s mission is to provide a quicker and easier means to control the sound balance and volume. Clicking once on the tray icon reveals a small window that allows quick volume control and makes it possible to configure the sound balance by switching a meter from left to right. Muting the system volume can be done by simply clicking in a checkbox. What is more, Windows’ integrated sound mixer can be easily accessed at this point.

Right-clicking on the tray icon reveals the main menu of SimpleSndVol, which allows you to configure the application’s behavior. You get to open the volume mixer and the Windows’ sound applet, as well as the volume control options in Windows, where you can configure which communication devices should show their own volume control.

SimpleSndVol grants you more control over the system’s volume, making it possible to change the volume using your mouse’s wheel. You simply have to scroll while hovering the tray icon. Middle clicking on the tray icon mutes the sound.

The volume can also be controlled using custom hotkeys. You get to set them up in the “Settings” window, combining keys on your keyboard that are easy to remember.

While Windows comes with its own built-in volume adjustment tools, SimpleSndVol makes it easier to control the system volume and the sound balance using the mouse wheel and custom hotkeys. While the default Windows tools are enough to many, others prefer such third-party applications that allow more control over the system’s settings.
