In its quest to modernize the Windows interface, Microsoft had to start integrating legacy menus inside the main Settings app for a more coherent experience. As such, plenty of long-time Windows users may want to restore the older layouts while they get accustomed to the redesigned ones.

For those who want one of the closest renditions of the original Windows Volume Mixer, equipped with shortcuts to the legacy Sound Properties menu, VolCon can bring back that accessible layout which used to be shipped with older Windows versions.

Thanks to its portable nature, the program can be a valuable addition to on-the-go setups, eliminating the need for lengthy or unnecessary installation wizards. After the initial startup, the app runs in the background and can be interacted with via its system tray icon, without having to take up screen space as an open window.

Left-clicking the icon brings up its main interface, which displays a list of the available audio output devices and their respective volume sliders in vertical orientation. This layout will be familiar to users accustomed to Windows’ legacy Volume Mixer that used to ship with older versions of the operating system.

Here, users can click on any device’s icon to bring up its respective Properties menu, where the title and default icon can be changed by the user to make devices more easily identifiable when changing volume levels.

Right-clicking the tray icon lets you bring up the old Sound Properties menu, which can feel more accessible to veteran Windows users who have not managed to familiarize themselves with the newer layout that can be interacted with through the Settings app.

One improvement that the application could use is a toggle for a dark mode feature, in order to make the interface blend in with Windows’ themes and provide users with a better experience during late night music listening sessions.
