DPRSplit

The sensor of Canon 5D Mark IV cameras generates images in which pixels contain two subpixels, allowing Canon editing software to perform various adjustments to enhance the resulting photos. The Dual Pixel RAW mode generates a CR2 file that contains two separate images. The first includes both sets of subpixels, while the second contains just one. DPRSplit can be used to extract these two individual frames.

The one-window interface of DPRSplit comprises all the options you must go through to configure the application. First, you must select the photos to process. To be more specific, DPRSplit enables you to browse for the folder where the CR2 are located. Optionally, you can instruct it to also scan subfolders recursively.

There are two processing modes you can choose from. DPRSplit can either extract both frames or save the second frame only (the one that contains just one set of subpixels). You have an extra option in this case as well: DPRSplit can skip file processing if the first frame is not overexposed.

A few options are available for customizing output-related settings. You can change the directory to save files in, and manage file conflicts, either by overwriting data or by skipping conversion. For your convenience, DPRSplit also features file renaming capabilities. In other words, you are free to create a name pattern for the resulting files with custom suffixes, and the frame number included.

DPRSplit is capable of detecting the camera model of the CR2 RAW images forwarded as input, the mode used to take the shot, and the shot date, all by reading the metadata information embedded in the source.

RAW images created by the camera are not that easy to process, but DNG files are much more versatile and are supported by many more editing applications. That is practically the motivation behind DPRSplit, which proves to be a simple application that does its job as promised.
