Many sites, including social media ones, require a certain size for uploaded images, so as to avoid issues related to the aspect ratio. While resizing an image might be easily done in any editor, preserving or changing the aspect ratio might be a challenge. Aspect Ratios Made Easy (or, in short, ARME) is a simple application whose main purpose is to help you resize and modify the aspect ratio of one or more images on your computer.
There is no need to install the application, as it is portable. In other words, Aspect Ratios Made Easy is up and running as soon as you double-click on the main executable file.
You are greeted by a black window that only shows its size in the title bar. To select the input files, you can drag and drop an image or a folder containing image files onto the main window or onto the application’s shortcut icon. An alternative is to paste the file or the image (just hit CTRL-V with an image in your clipboard to test this).
All image names are stored in an internal list that can be easily accessed via the right-click menu. In fact, the context menu is the place where all the application’s options are stored.
At this point, you might wonder how Aspect Ratios Made Easy actually works. Well, you can change the window size either using one of the predefined dimensions or by selecting a custom width and height. The maximum size can be changed, and the image orientation can be modified from landscape to portrait.
Essentially, the opened image is adjusted inside the custom-size window to the needed size and aspect ratio. The application enables you to select the aspect ratio of the output image. Should it need an extra frame to reach a certain aspect ratio, the application can also toggle a colored or a blurred background. While fitted to window, the image cannot be manipulated, as indicated by the red colored circle in the left upper corner. Using the keyboard arrows or the mouse wheel, you can move the position of the image in steps of 50 pixels.
There are additional functions and shortcuts that aid you in manipulating the input image and setting its size. The application supports common output formats, allowing you to save the output locally.
Changing the aspect ratio is a function that is available in most image editors out there, but a dedicated tool such as Aspect Ratios Made Easy might be of use if you are only looking to use this function. The application can fit the image to its window and help you resize it while preserving a specific aspect ratio.
