Whether we are talking about simple conversations amongst friends or the text on a website, animations are fun to use and watch. While there are online tools to create GIF animations, a standalone application such as Cat GIF Editor is surely more reliable in situations when no Internet connection is available.

Cat GIF Editor helps you create and edit GIF animations in a user-friendly environment. While having a simple layout that makes it easy to get around, its interface looks quite outdated, with buttons and an overall style that might remind you of old Windows 9x.

Other than that, the GUI features one-click access to all the tools and options, without having to navigate through complicated menus to find what you need. It features three different main tabs: the first for editing the animation, the second for previewing it and the third for opening the Options area. All are detailed below.

The editing tab enables you to work on your animation design. There is a generous preview area for the GIF image for you to see the result of your actions. The main toolbar includes various shapes that can be included in the animation, from points to lines, polygons, rectangles, ellipses, arrows, stars and even Bezier figures. Plain or Bezier text can also be inserted into the animation.

You can easily edit the properties of any shape you include in the design. Shapes can be included in all the frames or just some of them, at specific coordinates, with user-chosen colors and style of the border. The lower side of the editor features a timeline view, which allows the quick management of frames, transitions and durations.

Animations created with Cat GIF Editor can be saved in GIF and AVI format. Moreover, you can use this application to create a GIF from existing images and upload a GIF to an animation, record a GIF from screen activity or by extracting frames from a video. While its looks and the overall user experience need further improvements, the application can be of help when creating GIF animations for any purpose.
