Display Test

Display technology is far from perfect, and as such, quality defects are not uncommon. While some are more noticeable than others, you still ideally want something that is within your expectations.

Checking for display problems is best done while you’re still in the return window. Display Test is a simple software application that will display a series of images to help you look if your monitor exhibits any panel deficiencies: stuck or dead pixels, uniformity or color reproduction issues, and more.

At its core, the program is simply a slideshow that can help one spot any anomalies with their panel. Operating the app is done through the arrow keys: use the left and right arrows to cycle through the tests and try to carefully analyze how your display reproduces each picture.

You can also opt to jump to a specific test image, of which there are 18 in total, by pressing its corresponding number. Numbers 0-9 will take you up to the 9th picture, while Ctrl+0-8 will get you from the 10th to 18th.

The developer provides a description for each of the test images, helping users better understand what to look for. It’s a bit of a bummer that all this information is in an included text file and is not displayed on the program’s interface. I see this as a missed opportunity, as it would have been nice to be introduced to what each test represents in the app instead of a text file.

I would also advise users not to overlook the grayscale uniformity test, which can be triggered via the up and down arrow keys, as such problems often get overlooked by some manufacturers.

In any case, feel free to have a look around and see how your monitor performs. If you haven’t spotted any problems during normal use, then I’d advise against looking for problems, as display technology is still largely imperfect.
