PixIt!

Although drawing inspiration from older concepts, pixel art is really catching on and it grows more and more popular. In terms of the way users choose to pixelate their images, there are a multitude of solutions for that, available as both online platforms, as well as standalone, desktop apps. With simplicity in mind and intuitive handling, PixIt! provides a minimalist tool for pixelizing square-ratio images, to a preferred pixel-rate.

The app comes sporting a truly basic interface, which lacks both design and customization options. However, if going past the aesthetics, or their lack of, users can add files by resorting to the dedicated button.

A large, discernible slider controls the pixel rate, and although it is a somewhat ergonomic solution, it would have been beneficial to also have the option to input the values numerically. The latest iteration of the app also offers users the chance to define custom dimensions for the loaded images before the pixelation process.

One of the first caveats that come to attention when using the app, is the fact that once an image file has been loaded and the desired pixelation level set, there are no output options. In other words, users can’t control the output location, which will always be the same directory as the one where the input files are being stored.

The resulting files will be automatically renamed, but this is just a work-around, rather than a solution. Speaking of workarounds, if one wishes to make the process more effective when dealing with multiple images, there is no way to “work-around” manually inputting one image at a time, since the app lacks batch processing.

Considering its numerous limitations and rather obsolete design, this app could be considered a fair candidate for those who seek a simple tool for pixelating their images. Having the ability to define custom dimensions for the pixelated images offers users a decent degree of flexibility when working with non-square images.
