If you are a fan of viewing, analyzing and editing geospatial data, then there are high chances you heard of QGIS. While it is true that the geographic information system application boasts many benefits, it does come with a few setbacks, one of them being that it is cumberstone when you want to create maps.

QField is a simplified version of QGIS that comes with a touch optimized interface that until recently has mostly been available for Android. The desktop version is still in Beta, but it does provide the same features as the Android version.

Since the tool was initially built for Android, you will notice that the interface is minimalistic, so you will enjoy an interface that is less cluttered. Simply put, the app displays solely the tools you need for the task at hand, so you don’t get distracted. Moreover, the developer states that the interface is exactly the same as the mobile version, namely clean and simple.

It is important to note that the program is not a rebuild of QGIS, even though it has the same compatibility in terms of widgets and libraries. What this means is that you can still use the libraries, as it is compatible with all QGIS related. What makes it different is that it is built around modes that are similar to the map tools of QGIS and that define the task at hand.

Since the tool is based on QGIS and hence, the idea remains the same. If you are using it on both mobile and desktop, then you will be happy to learn that the app remembers the configurations, so you don’t have to bother setting up QField on all your devices.
