Sofonesia Icon Extractor is an approachable piece of software that can extract icons from any programs which contain this type of resource files. It doesn't actually have any more options than that ones necessary for extracting and saving icons. It supports ICO, CUR and BMP file types for the output.

This freeware utility gets quickly installed. However, if you come across any errors, then you probably need Visual Basic runtime files to get it up and running.

It opts for a straightforward interface with a simple design, which displays only a handful of options. The classical file browser is put at your disposal for finding and indicating a file whose icon you want to extract. According to the supported formats, Sofonesia Icon Extractor accepts any kind of file, so feel free to explore any kind of objects with icons.

It's possible to preview the icon and save it to the disk by specifying the output directory, file name and preferred extension. Worth mentioning is that the program saves the new files with the 32x32 px resolution only, and it cannot identify multiple icons in the same resource files (wherever this is applicable).

Unsurprisingly, it didn't hamper the computer's performance throughout our evaluation, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly. No errors popped up and it didn't hang or crash.

Sofonesia Icon Extractor is speedy and easy to use by anyone, even users with no previous experience with icon extraction tools, but it has limited functionality. For instance, it can only save icons with the 32x32 px size. We are also keeping in mind that it hasn't been updated for a long time, and this is probably why it doesn't meet our standards.
