Looking through your photos is a task that can be accomplished by the built-in Photos with minimal hassle, but that solution does leave a bit to be desired if you're a user who's after something more. There are numerous viable alternatives for third-party photo viewers, and most of them are free, so there's really no barrier of entry.

Free Picture Browser, much like its name suggests, is a picture browser that is also free. Through it, users will be able to browse through their pictures and even edit them a little through the filters and photo editing options on offer.

Perhaps the most noticeable trait of this piece of software lies in the functional interface design, which reminds one of the early, Windows 2000 days. While there's nothing wrong with that, users who are after sleeker interface designs may not be too eager to give this one a try.

Nevertheless, browsing through your photos and viewing them works just as you would expect. Navigation is convenient, as accessing certain folders to get to specific photos is facilitated by the panels on the interface.

If you right-click a photo, a number of functions will reveal themselves to you. These can be used to modify the look of your stills in several ways: filters to invert colors and transform your picture into an oil painting or watercolor can be applied, and you can also modify the hues, shades, as well as the luminance levels of your photo. Increasing picture clarity is also available via the Sharpen function.

While a few of these functions work decently, the lack of a way to modify the intensity of certain filters is a bit of a missed opportunity. For instance, we found the Emboss, Engrave, and Woodcut filters to be much too aggressive, as there was no way to dial down their intensity.

Free Picture Browser will help you navigate through your photos, view your favorite stills, and edit the images you feel need a little bit of retouching. The editing part can be largely hit-or-miss, however.
