You can’t get much information about a media file from the Properties window, and most media players don’t provide you with extensive details either. If you need to know everything about a video or audio file, you will need to rely on a specialized utility.

Nectar is one of the options at your disposal, a straightforward utility that enables you to view detailed information about media files with simple drag and drop. It features a minimalistic UI and is very easy to use.

Once you’ve installed and launched the application, you will be presented with a small window where you can drop any file you wish to inspect. While mostly designed to be used with videos and audio files, some details are provided for images as well.

The information is organized into three categories: base, video and audio. You can minimize any of these in order to limit the amount of data displayed in the window, as well as set the program to remain on top of all other windows.

Nectar displays extensive details about each file’s format and video and audio specifications. The data is gathered and shown pretty much instantly, so the program is very easy to work with.

In order to extract information, you can either copy individual lines to the clipboard or press the IMG or TXT buttons, which send all the gathered data to the clipboard in image or text form. However, it might have helped if it were possible to export the information directly to an image or text file.

On the whole, Nectar does its job very well, providing you with detailed information about the specifications of your media files. It is also remarkably easy to use, only requiring you to drop items inside the main window.
