Subtrans

Subtrans is a lightweight Windows application whose purpose is to help you translate SRT and plain text subtitles.

The portable status of this tool enables you to store it on portable media devices and carry it with you.

The most important aspect is that it does not leave entries in your Windows registry, so you may uninstall it by deleting the files that you have downloaded from the Internet.

You are welcomed by a clean GUI that allows you to preview videos and check out the subtitles directly in the main window. You can make the utility show the movie panel at the bottom, left or right side of the primary window.

Two small panels are implemented for helping you carry out the subtitle translation tasks from one language into another. Plus, you can view only the translation or both the source and translated text.

You can preview clips via the Windows Media Player support. Plus, you are allowed to seek for a position in the video streams, play, pause or stop the current selection, and adjust the volume.

On the downside, there’s no support for a help manual so experimenting with the built-in configuration parameters is your only chance in order to understand how this program works.

Subtrans gives you the possibility to import the source subtitle and translation from SRT or plain text file format, and export data to the same file formats.

You are allowed to insert text into the translation before or after the selected line, delete the selected text line, adjust the timing, find and replace data, as well as adjust the font, font style and size of the subtitle. The tool also keeps a history with all performed editing tasks and you may easily roll back the changes.

Subtrans comes with a built-in dictionary that allows you to translate text from English into Farsi. You may manually change the source text and check out the translated version. Optionally, you may select a words or phrase and look for it on different online sources via your web browser.

The automatic translation mode is integrated for helping you translate subtitle data from one language into another. The tool supports different languages, such as English, German, Greek, French, Hindi, Hungarian, Spanish, Romanian, and Turkish.

We have tested the utility on Windows 8.1 Pro and come across some bugs. The automatic translation mode does not work properly. The utility became unresponsive for several minutes and crashed.

Subtrans bundles a useful pack of features and can be handled by rookies and professionals alike. However, it hasn’t been updated for a while, so compatibility issues may appear on newer operating systems.
