In case your Internet connection is not really something to be proud of, there’s a high chance you still rely on specialized applications for playback of multimedia files. Some managed to build quite the reputation over the years, but this doesn’t mean others need to be overlooked. For instance, Light Media Player is built with simplicity in mind and can play various multimedia files for you.
One of the last steps of the installer neatly offers the chance to have the application launched to quickly check out the set of features. The visual design isn’t something to make it stand out from the crowd, but the high resemblance to Windows Media Player makes sure you don’t have a hard time figuring out the set of features.
As such, you’re first put up against a pretty large, empty space, with all playback controls, including volume and progress slider found in the lower section of the interface. Unfortunately, drag and drop are not supported as a method of input, so you need to rely on the built-in browse dialog, but only one file can be opened at a time.
The application is capable of processing both video and audio files, as well as URLs. Although you can only open a file at a time, there’s the possibility to load playlists, but there’s absolutely no control over items, except skipping to the next item on the list.
Playback controls only include the basics, and there’s no equalizer for audio enhancement. You need to rely on the interface controls, because there are no buttons on the taskbar highlighter, hotkey commands, or support for a multimedia keyboard.
Taking everything into consideration, we can state that Light Media Player comes with good intentions, and can prove handy if you’re not really interested in a pretty complex set of functions. Controls need to be handled from the main window, while the lack of a playlist editor leaves much to be desired.
