There’s a lot of multimedia content to be explored online, but you might also want to be able to perform offline playback as well. Modern media players come packed with updated codecs to be able to process all kinds of formats. As such, ThunderSoft GemPlayer presents itself as a practical video player, which can also play password-protected clips.

Setup doesn’t take a lot of your time, with the possibility to launch the application right afterwards. The set of features is wrapped around a pretty slick interface, with a slidable playlist panel, and most of the space representing the preview area. A bunch of controls are found in the lower section, namely the playback controls.

Adding items to the list is either done through a drag and drop operation, or the browse dialog. Unfortunately, only one item can be added at a time, and there’s no option to insert the content of an entire folder, which can be a little frustrating, especially if you want to heavily populate the playlist.

In terms of file support, the application is sure to be able to play most of what you encounter. You can load items under formats like MOD, TOD, MTS, M2P, 3GP, AVI, DIVX, MOV, QT, SWF, MP2, MP3, OGG, AAC, M4A, MP4, NUT, AC3, YUV, RM, WMA, WMV, ASF, MPEG, NSV, WAV, AIFF, MKV, and MXF. However, one of the core feature is the support for GEM files, which are password-protected videos.

Playback is flawless, with the possibility to resize the main window and even switch to a fullscreen mode. Playback controls are decent, letting you easily start, stop, skip through content, and adjust volume. Unfortunately, next items don’t automatically play, and there’s no support for hotkey commands for a more comfortable approach on playback controls.

Taking everything into consideration, we can state that ThunderSoft GemPlayer is a decent video player with its specialty being the support for GEM password-protected video files. Although it looks pretty, it lacks certain features like hotkeys and better management of the playlist to make it suitable on the long-run.
