Screen activity is not only important to you, but it can be the key to solving different issues, or building a tutorial explaining specific features to others with less knowledge or experience in the matter. In this regard, WinVid comes with the means to help you record desktop activity into a video file.

With no installation required, the application can be launched as soon as the download is finished. This means you can carry it around on a USB flash drive to be used on other computers as well, without worrying that the target PC is affected, since registries are not a dependency.

The main window is pretty compact, making accommodation a walk in the park. Even so, there’s a built-in help manual to get you out of sticky situations. Initiating the recording session is done at the press of a button, but there’s a downside to this, because the main window doesn’t automatically minimize, so the beginning of the video needs to be chopped off.

The same can be said about the end of the clip, especially because there’s no support for hotkeys for faster, more comfortable recording session, so you need to rely on the main window to also stop the recording session. The result is an MP4 file located in the source directory.

There’s the possibility to initiate playback directly from the main window, in the application’s custom player. Unfortunately, the quality of the recording leaves more to be desired, with no built-in possibility to configure it. You can’t configure capture region, while the cursor is not visible, and nor can you make it so.

All things considered, we come to the conclusion that WinVid comes with a poor set of features, recording the whole screen and no option to choose region. The cursor can’t be included in the video, which has a major impact on overall practicality, especially if you want to use captured sessions for tutorials.
