A lightweight console application that provides a convenient way to test various network parameters even when the ICMP is blocked. #Ping network #Troubleshoot network #Network monitor #Network #Ping #Troubleshoot
Sometimes, ICMP traffic may be blocked or restricted for various reasons, including, but not limited to reduce potential security risks, minimize network congestion, or enforce certain network policies. The problem with an ICMP blocked is that the traditional ping tools don’t work.
TCPING is a program that allows you to test network connectivity by sending TCP probes to a specified IP address or hostname and, hence, can come in handy in situations when you need an alternative ping tool.
Since this is a console-based app, you don’t really need to meet any prerequisites, but you may want to run it as administrator to avoid errors. The idea behind the tool is to provide an alternative to the classic ping tools, an alternative that should work when the traffic is blocked or restricted.
As far as its functionality goes, the utility packs several important functions similar to a regular ping tool. More precisely, it allows you to monitor your network connection, determine packet loss, analyze network latency, and display various statistics. It provides features like retrying hostname resolution, enforcing IPv4 or IPv6 address resolution, and monitoring and auditing network peers.
One interesting feature is the ability of the tool to display the minimum, average, and maximum latency of the TCP probes. Simply put, it can show you how fast or slow your network connection is by measuring the time it takes for data to travel between your computer and a specific IP address or hostname. You can assess the quality of the network connection and identify potential bottlenecks.
Overall, TCPING is a useful tool for network administrators, system administrators, and anyone involved in network troubleshooting and analysis. The program serves as an alternative to ping in environments where ICMP is blocked, providing an alternative method for network testing.
What's new in TCPING 2.5.0:
- new feature: add -show-failures-only flag to omit printing successful probes
- new feature: re-add static Linux binary. Thanks to @daniql
- new feature: add support for Linux arm64 in Makefile. Thanks to @ChrisClarke246
- fix: extra precision for seconds calculation when the value is under a second. Thanks to @daniql
