Microsoft's deliberations with regard to changing the default font for its Office lineup were to be expected. The Calibri typeface family, though still as recognizable as ever, is due for retirement. Aptos Font's coming is no surprise, as it constitutes part of Microsoft's effort to adapt its product line-up — both in form and function — to the current climate.

Now shipping as the default font choice for Microsoft's suite, Aptos has a lot to live up to after 15 years of Calbri. Tinges of familiarity have been carefully implanted to ease users into this change: a quick comparison between the two will reveal Aptos' drive for a less mechanical typeface, whose slight character roundedness works to improve readability and make the font more welcoming to all audiences.

As a result, though changed, the new font still maintains a rapport with users who were fans of Calibri. Of course, should you not like what Aptos offer, you can change the font to anything you fancy. Speaking strictly about its now-default status, however, Aptos is arguably a touch more legible than Calibri, while still maintaining a professional demeanor to make it suitable for all kinds of work, office-related or otherwise.
