Application Inventory

On the visual side of things, the application stores all of its features in a classic window design, with no elements to make it stand out from the crowd. Most of the space is taken by the list of detected items, along with various related info fields you get to choose when setting up the analysis process.

There’s nothing shown unless you start to analyze your computer, and doing so brings up a small prompt with a few related options. Among others, you can set the application to cross-check registries and shortcuts, add related filters, and, as mentioned above, select the column headers of interest.

It can take some time to get the list ready, but this only depends on the number of locations and applications you have installed on your computer. Once done, the list gets filled in, but leaves more to be desired. In other words, every related executable is shown, with multiple, similar entries, thus creating a lot of confusion.

On the other hand, there’s a built-in search tool that lets you look for items of interest, as well as several options to open the properties panel, or the source folder. In case the list is structured according to demands, it’s possible to have it saved as CSV file to be analyzed later on.

Application Inventory comes with good intentions, but leaves a lot more to be desired, especially because of the confusing method of showing detected items. Sure enough, there are plenty of info columns to make it easier, but since every executable is targeted, it can take a while to analyze even a handful of programs.
