You certainly have plenty of choices if you’re looking for a note-taking application, as numerous products are available for various platforms, online and offline, paid and free.
Notes is a promising open-source program for Windows, macOS and Linux. It sports a minimalistic UI and offers a few key features, but it is still quite basic at present. However, many improvements are planned for the future.
A large part of the philosophy behind the application’s design revolves around the user interface, which is intended to be as simple as possible while still being easy to use. Mind you, not a lot of features are included at present, but things look good enough so far.
However, while it is intuitive, the application’s UI isn’t exactly impressive right now, as it doesn’t look polished and there aren’t any customization options available.
Most users should find the workflow to be straightforward enough, as a list of all your notes is displayed in the left-hand panel, and a mouse click is all it takes to open them in the main panel.
When you close Notes, the program is sent to the system tray, and you can bring it up again using the Win + N key combination. The same shortcut can be used to send it back to the tray area.
A simple search function is available, making it easier to find specific notes, and you can also backup your database and restore it later.
When trying out this program, it is worth remembering that most of the features planned by the development team have not yet been implemented, so there’s not a lot you can do with this application at present.
Nevertheless, Notes is still a decent note-taking utility for users who like to keep things simple, and it has the advantage of being easily accessible from the system tray.
