Communication has been greatly enhanced since the Internet is available in most corners of the world. What's more, specialized applications provide the necessary means to easily share files and start conversations from the comfort of your desktop. Kapanga Softphone is one such application, coming equipped with IP to IP communication.

The application's features are stored in an intuitive interface that resembles a mobile phone. What represents the display provides a preview of a connected webcam. A standard keypad is available and necessary call control buttons.

However, you can easily customize appearance and choose what buttons to be visible in the interface, as well as several preset skins to choose from or even an external XML file.

In terms of functionality, the application needs some heavy configuration on your behalf. Accessing the dedicated menu might keep you busy for a while. You can set the application to use direct IP to IP connections, or fully configure a proxy.

Since it's mostly targeting IP to IP use, SIP parameters are also configurable. You can set the application to automatically reject calls to unknown users, respond to original port, set session expiry time, configure your user, or even select a song to play when on hold.

The application also proves to be useful in business environments, with integrated FAX support. A few settings can be handled for careful configuration. Unfortunately, you cannot preview files you send, nor can you further process them, but you can add TIFF and PDF files so it shouldn't be a concern.

For easier access, the application lets you keep a rich contacts database with up to five number slots, or even import vCards. With a click of a button, you can dial any number in the list and even have three lines connected.

Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Kapanga Softphone does not necessarily bring anything new to the market, but the overall design makes a good impression. You need to spend a little time to properly set it up, but can come in handy in various environments.
