Biblos

Biblos is a feature-rich and user-friendly word processor that comes bundled with an extensive collection of handy tools, suitable for both normal people and those visually impaired, with poor vision, or none at all. It features a speech recognition system, which converts the text to MP3 tracks.

The layout is outdated but neatly structured, with pin-able quick toolbars, for easy access, and with the editor, occupying most of the space. The supported file formats are RTF, RTC, HTML, TXT, XML, CPP, DPR. One of the purposes of the app is to help create drafts, similar to Microsoft Word, with less unnecessary add-ons, while providing specialized tools to insert Braille characters.

In addition to the standard editing elements, like the copy, cut, paste, delete and find/replace, it also comes with formatting options. Like any other similar editors, you can change the font type, color, size, and style, as well as arrange the text, choose several custom tones, enter bullet/number lists, and headers.

You can add images from file, scanner, or a tactile one, in one of the supported formats, such as PCX, PNG, JPG, BMP, and ICO. From the Tools menu, the app lets you configure the printing properties for Braille documents, enable the virtual device, enter symbols, manage keyboards and dictionaries, along with recurrences, tables, and hotkeys.

A nice touch is the speech feature that gives you the possibility to convert the composition to MP3 and DAISY audiobooks, and configure its relevant settings, like voice, pause interval, audio quality, and file format.

Taking everything into account, Biblos is a reliable and useful application that designed especially for those with poor vision or none at all, to create and generate Braille documents and print them out using a specialized printer.
