When it comes to writing, every individual has its own style. Sure enough, computer fonts also differ, but technology is now advanced enough for a PC to recognize handwriting through dedicated means. For instance, Neuroph comes with this purpose in mind, providing an intuitive workspace to experiment in.

The application completely relies on Java Runtime Environment to function, so it needs to be installed on the target PC. This comes as an advantage here, especially because Java is not platform-dependent, thus making it possible to run on different devices, including with touch-enabled screens.

In fact, it’s best to use the application on a touch-enabled device, unless you want to spend the time, and effort of writing with your mouse cursor, making the whole OCR feature not only frustrating, but rather obsolete. Moreover, there’s an editable text pad at your disposal with which to interact with the keyboard, just as you would in any plain text editor.

The drawing area is where handwriting goes. No other tools need to be selected, and you can start drawing characters write away. This needs to be done one character at a time, with the possibility to clear the canvas if there are too many mistakes.

Once done, hitting the “recognize” button instantly reveals one or more characters, followed by match percentage. The right one can be selected, and added to the text edit area. If you trust in your handwriting skills, adding can be done automatically, without providing a list of matching items.

Unfortunately, detection technique doesn’t feel so polished, and you find that even close to perfect characters show up results to leave you scratching your head. As such, writing requires a great deal of attention, and you’re sure to switch to conventional means shortly after trying a few characters.

All things considered, we can safely state that Neuroph provides an intuitive writing pad fitted with an OCR section. The text pad is simple, allowing basic text editing, but as far as the handwriting recognition method is concerned, it leaves more to be desired, and isn’t really an efficient method of writing lengthy messages.
