Keeping track of the number of words and characters within any given text is fairly important, especially if you're working on projects and you have to meet word limits and deadlines.

Although there's no shortage of word counting tools on the Internet and most specialized text processors out there also come with built-in tools of this sort, there are situations when you might want a "second" opinion.

This said, with its generic and self-explanatory name, Word Counter is an uber-simplistic piece of software that offers you a quick way of getting an accurate reading on the number of words and characters of your texts.

Regarding the installation of this application, there's really not much to be said, except that it is as straightforward as they come. Right off the bat, it becomes evident that this is not what you would call a full-featured word-counter.

It adopts a stripped-down user interface with a simple bar that displays the number of words and characters, and a box where you can either begin typing in order to see the word count in real time, or you can paste your text and get the final results, and that's about it.

Sure the application works well in all conditions and considering its bare-bones UI, there's absolutely no chance of not being able to work with this tool but these facts, alone, are not enough for this tool be relevant.

For example, there are no spell-checking or highlighting features. Certain users might find it annoying that this app does not display the character count, excluding the spaces between the words.

The application would have been even more useful if it would bundle a few SEO-orientated features. For instance, we would have liked the app even more if it would show you a percentage of the most used keywords within the article at hand.

Of course, these are not all the features that could be implemented to Word Counter. Other features that come to mind are, support for Thesaurus, cloud-synchronization, activity tracker and even some smart gimmicks for timing your writing sessions.

All things considered and while it is clearly not the most feature-packed tool of this sort out there, Word Counter has the benefit of offering one of the most straightforward ways to count words and characters.

If we were to look at it without including it into any context, then, sure, Word Counter is a good application that works well and does its simple job without fuss. But, once you consider the plethora of similar, more advanced and a lot more feature-rich tools of this sort out there, the truth is that Word Counter falls a bit short.
