QwikTape

There's a lot of variety to text editors, and the good thing is that you don't necessarily have to spring for a mainstream offering. New solutions from independent developers are coming out all the time, which makes it all the more exciting to check out new stuff.

QwikTape is a text editor...but not really. Interestingly enough, it seeks to provide an experience similar to that of writing on paper. More specifically, the program is all about calculations and annotations, which it supports through a set of smart functions to make them more accessible.

While you can do calculations and annotate them to your heart's content, the program can very well be used as a text editor, where you're free to jot down anything on your mind.

Using it strictly for text editing does not do the program justice, however. There's no Markdown support to help you format your text, and it's clear the direction lies elsewhere.

The main usage is with calculations, which can be managed quite effectively through the tool. Though an actual calculator might be more fitting in some cases, this one marries both form and function to provide a slightly different take on calculators.

As it is outlined in the Introduction document, the program's calculator functionalities are very intuitive to use. You can do additions, subtractions, divisions, multiplications, percentages, and powers in a way that is both functional and accessible.

Variables can be defined and used as you see fit, and the program does well to recognize them without much effort from your part. Being able to annotate your calculations also helps. Perhaps you want to keep track of your expenses — it's all straightforward to do here.

You're also free to customize the software interface with any colors you like through the Settings menu. After you're done with your stuff, it's worth mentioning that exporting your tapes as PDFs is possible.

Overall, QwikTape makes for an intriguing software offering. It's free to use and intuitive, and its take on doing calculations is sure to be enticing enough for some users looking to try something a little different.
