gedit

gedit is a multipurpose text editor that comes packed with a familiar interface and support for TXT, PHP, HTML, XML and CSS, among many others.

The installation procedure does not take a long time to finish. gedit's main application window resembles the one of a simple word processor like Notepad, with a key difference being that it features multiple tabs, meaning that you can work in multiple documents at the same time.

Syntax highlighting is supported for plain text, INI and changelog files, CSS, C#, JavaScript, R, Octave, and so on.

It is possible to insert the current date and time, display a sidebar to quickly select documents, switch to full screen mode, check spelling and enable an automatic spellchecker, as well as change the document language, to name some notable options.

As far as program preferences are concerned, you can disable text wrapping mode, display line numbers, highlight the current line and matching bracket, insert spaces instead of tabs, enable automatic indentation, as well as ask the utility to create a file backup before saving.
