Despite Microsoft’s consistently valiant efforts to maintain support for outdated pieces of software that date back decades prior to the release of their operating system’s latest version, full compatibility is not always guaranteed, with some programs having issues when trying to adapt to modern hardware. As such, for those situations when older video games cannot be rendered in full-screen due to either an intentional omission or incompatibility reasons, a handy utility known as Better Fullscreen comes into play, which essentially resizes the windows of your selected programs to fit your screen size.
When launched, the app starts up its background process followed by a dedicated system tray icon from where users can start setting up custom profiles for the actively running processes, in order to automate the initialization of your various games and programs embedded in your workflow. Those whose monitors’ resolutions exceed the templates supported by the games in question have the ability of setting precise parameters for both the height and width of the item’s window, which may prove useful when trying to avoid the black vertical bars of games designed for 4:3 displays.
Those with ultrawide monitors can make the most of their screen real estate by selecting the exact position for placing multiple running programs in a tiled fashion for a better multitasking experience. In order to avoid any clashes with currently running apps’ shortcuts, Better Fullscreen also lets you create a custom hotkey combination for adding new items to the profile lists. Since unexpected errors can occur, or the app may sometimes display anomalous behavior due to the nature of its features, an event log is also available in a dedicated tab to troubleshoot various issues.
Given its portable format, the program can be easily added to on-the-go USB flash drive-powered setups for those who frequent LAN parties or internet cafés. Finally, since its source code is openly available, those with programming experience can make suggestions or fork the repository to create custom versions featuring changes that fit their preferences, such as the implementation of an optional dark mode.
Whether you want to make the most of your retro gaming sessions by stretching the games’ windows across your entire digital canvas, or you simply wish to create custom tiled layouts for multitasking more easily throughout your workflows, Better Fullscreen may be the right tool for the job, given its lightweight yet feature-rich format.
