Despite its recent improvements, the latest iteration of Windows still lacks certain features that many could use in their day-to-day tasks. One example is the symbol selector function of the Clipboard History command that, while it is certainly a step-up compared to the aging Character Map utility, it does not possess a search box for users to quickly find the desired item, which is where SymbolPicker comes into play.
Thanks to its portable format, users can easily add the program to their USB flash drive-powered on-the-go setup without having to rely on lengthy installation wizards to run it for the first time on any of their machines. Given its open-source license, not only can one inspect the code and contribute to it as they see fit, but they also do not have to worry about telemetry-based data collection when using the app.
The layout is straightforward and easy to use, with the app’s main window resembling Windows’ built-in character insertion section of the Clipboard History menu. Where this program differs, however, is through its inclusion of a handy search bar sitting atop the symbol list, for users to avoid digging for the right character to copy to the clipboard.
An incredibly useful feature provided by the app is its editable database that you can fully customize to match your particular workflow. As such, in addition to having the option of reordering or removing the existing symbols to reach your most frequently used ones more easily, one can also add custom characters not included by default, with a dedicated description to find it through the search engine.
Those in the market for an easily accessible symbol selecting utility with a customizable database may find SymbolPicker useful thanks to its resizable window that can fit as many symbols as necessary at the same time, making it perfect for multiple-monitor setups.
What's new in SymbolPicker 1.1.0:
- We have added more symbols (maths symbols mostly) and now you have to search and press Enter to initiate the search because otherwise, it would take a long time to show the symbols. This issue will be fixed in the future.
- Alternatively, you can download the symbols.txt file and replace the old one you have to get the new symbols.
