Just like hand writing style is determined by each individual's hand movement, so do computer characters benefit from a large variety of specialized characters that are either standard, or custom-made. As the name suggests, Unicode Characters comes as a means of accessing and learning all Unicode characters.
The main advantage of the application is that you don't need to go through a setup process to take advantage of its features because of its portability. What's more, it takes up little space, as well as only a few resources used, so you can safely store it on a removable drive and use on the go.
There isn't much to look at in terms of design, with all features stored in a simple window that doesn't pose any accommodation problems whatsoever. Navigation is easy, with all characters cleverly displayed with large representations, description, as well as corresponding code points.
The application is more of a database than a learning utility, with little to no management functions. On the other hand, there is an implemented search engine you can use to look up specific characters. You might wonder how to search for a character used to define your criteria, but this is done either by inputting the corresponding code point or part of description.
Unfortunately, there are no implemented options with which to put characters to good use. If you want to insert them in your documents, you need to know which font set they belong to. It would have been nice to at least be able to export all characters to a text document or have them sent to your clipboard, not to mention a text field to write a full text string.
The idea behind the concept that is Unicode Characters is neat, especially that the database gets constantly updated and there are currently over 110,000 entries. Corresponding details and code are at your fingertips, as well as a powerful search engine to use, but the lack of any option to use characters cuts a little out of practicality. However, if you're into programming or design and looking for special characters or their code, this is the app for you.
