The Internet is filled with all sort of applications that you could use in order to make your job easier. One of such applications is Diogenes.
It allows you to search and browse databases of ancient texts. It sports a clean and very visually appealing graphical interface with many tools at hand.
The application doesn't take long to install and it doesn't come with a complicated setup that you would need to complete before you can actually use it. It sports a really clean and intuitive graphical interface with many tools at hand.
Diogenes allows you to search and browse databases of ancient texts, primarily in Latin and Greek, that are published by the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the Packard Humanities Institute.
Diogenes has many features, such as linking all Greek and Latin words to the Perseus morphological analysis tools and dictionaries, and the ability to jump straight to the context of any search result or dictionary citation.
A web browser provides a familiar and easy-to-use interface to the databases: search for a word or phrase, browse to a particular location in an ancient text, view texts in your browser, and cut and paste them to other applications.
By default, the web interface displays Greek as Unicode, but if you need compatibility with other encodings, such as WinGreek, GreekKeys, or LaTeX, you can output Greek in many of these different formats.
While the basic interface is quite simple, more complex searches are easily done: use spaces to delimit word-boundaries; limit your search to particular texts (for the TLG, you can limit by genre, date, etc.); search for the presence of two or more words in the same clause, sentence, paragraph or range of lines.
You can change the Greek input mode and the output encoding if you want. Font style can also be changed together with the amount of context to show in searches. Diogenes is a very nice application that you could use in order to search and browse databases of ancient texts, primarily in Latin and Greek.
What's new in Diogenes 3.1.6:
- Thanks to the Perseus Project, Diogenes now comes equipped with morphological data on all of the words in the TLG/PHI disks and with the LSJ Greek and Lewis-Short Latin dictionaries. It comes with an English dictionary, too, to make those dictionaries more accessible to non-native speakers of English. As a result of including all this data, the size of the download has increased enormously.
- Instead of linking to the Perseus web-page, clicking on Greek and Latin words now sends an AJAX request to Diogenes which inserts the analysis and definition into the margin of the page. Not only are the words in the databases clickable, so too are the words in the dictionary definitions: click on any Latin, Greek or English word to get its definition. Click on citations in the definition to jump to the context.
