The heart is a living creature's engine that makes it possible for every organ to harmoniously function, thus keeping the organism alive. In medicine, knowing how to read heartbeats helps doctors determine the state and whether or not any diseases or risks are there. Enthusiasts or medicine students can practice reading cardiac rhythm in a safe environments such as ECG Simulator.
Launching the application brings up a well-designed and intuitive interface that gets you quickly up and running. All features are found in the main window, with no additional menus to bring up except for a couple of drop-down menus that let you select condition.
The center area constantly displays a grid view of cardiac rhythm so you can start analysis. You can bring up a ruler to carefully analyze the graph, which comes in handy for data gathering or comparison. However, you can only enable the ruler while in pause mode.
Beginners might question the application's teaching capabilities, since little info is provided. However, taking a closer look you find a breathtaking amount of rhythm types as well as ectopic activity situations for various conditions of the heart.
What's more, hitting the “Random” button hides details while triggering one of the available conditions and states, so you can practice your knowledge level. Situations can be altered by adjusting HR, ration and a few other values according to the heart's condition.
Unfortunately, there are no export functions so if you want to write down any values to help you better learn, you'd best keep a text editor at hand. Seeing how you can switch to a fullscreen view, it would have been useful to see a function to take a snapshot with the ruler attached and quickly have it saved to file.
ECG Simulator does a pretty good job at teaching you how to read heartbeats. The overall design is intuitive and lets you quickly accommodate and get acquainted with various conditions. After all, heart beats do not determine your feelings, but your health status so it's a good idea to pay closer attention to what it actually says.
