The digitization of every aspect concerning our day-to-day lives brought forth incredible advantages that we take for granted nowadays. One area that benefited the most is with regards to the access to information. One example of an application that provides easily accessible information to its users, without compromising on privacy or usability, is Elementary: Periodic Table.
In terms of layout, the app launches directly into the original periodic table view. For having additional information at a glance, the program can display each element’s atomic weight, density or abundance inside its dedicated square. To improve findability, the user can set the elements’ colors according to their categories or their blocks.
For times when only a small number of elements is necessary for viewing, zooming in or out can be done using dedicated buttons placed on the bottom right side of the window, or by holding the control key and scrolling up and down with the mouse.
Clicking any element brings up a popup window which lists its most important details, such as specific heat, electronegativity and common isotopes, along with its boiling and melting points. In a pinch, the user can also quickly access a Wikipedia link for a more comprehensive overview or a YouTube video link which shows the element in its physical form, while also outlining its use cases and prevalence in the real-world.
The elements can be shown in a list view for expanding each element’s details to the right sidebar, for easier readability. While in this layout, the user can sort the elements by their atomic number or name, while also having access to a search bar for quickly finding the right substance.
Customization-wise, the app supports a dark theme for better night reading experience and the ability to choose between Kelvin, Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature values, depending on which system is utilized in the user’s region. When writing essays or solving equations, all of the elements’ details and values can be easily copied to the clipboard for effortless pasting.
For those looking for a way to browse Mendeleev’s periodic table of elements without navigating through advertisements or clunky interfaces, Elementary: Periodic Table offers a nice and smooth experience for students doing their chemistry-related assignments.
