For some, learning Chinese is a breeze, while for others, it could seem like the hardest chore possible. No matter the methods one is choosing in learning the language, a dictionary — be that on paper or PC/device — is always a good idea. Han Dictionary can be the tool you're looking for if the computer is a more facile environment for your study.

Getting accustomed to a new language requires focus and discipline, thus a complicated program tends to not get the same appreciation as one with a more simplified build. In this case, Han Dictionary puts out an intuitive UI that ensures the user no extra hurdles will be jumped. However, the application does not offer a bag full of words or characters, but just the translation and definitions. The work of building up a hefty dictionary falls on the user's side.

The basic construction includes two tabs, Home and Save. Home is where the actual dictionary is contained. All you have to do is to copy the character you are interested in studying and click Search. You'll notice the character is added in the right sidebar. Select it and the main pane will offer you the information you are looking for.

Details like the written form of the character (simplified or traditional) will be revealed, along with the pronunciation and definition of the said word.

Those looking to extract details from within the app should check the Save tab. From there, one can save a word/character or a definition to XLS. Being limited to a single output format is a bit of a downside here. The app would've been more flexible if at least a text-oriented format could be available, and a printing option as well.

In conclusion, Han Dictionary is a straightforward tool that takes Chinese characters and breaks them down. Around 120.000 words and definitions are advertised in matters of capacity, so coverage is not an issue. Where the app falls short, is the output formats and the lack of a print function. Otherwise, it looks like a decent beginner tool.
