Kana Test

Kana Test is a lightweight Windows application whose purpose is to help you test your knowledge about Japanese characters, namely Hiragana and Katakana.

The tool is portable and can be stored on USB flash drives or other devices. You may run it without administrative privileges on a target computer. Plus, it leaves no entries in your Windows registry so you can get rid of it using a simple deletion task. Gaining access to its features requires only opening the executable file (you do not have to go through an installation process).

You are welcomed by a clean and intuitive design that allows you to tweak some settings related to the content of the test. A help manual cannot be found in the package but you can decode the dedicated parameters on your own because they look straightforward.

Kana Test gives you the possibility to select the symbols that are included in a test and choose between Hiragana or Katakana characters, or employ both of them.

What’s more, you are allowed to specify the number of questions comprised in a test, show hints, and reveal statistics at the end of the test. The training module implies that you write the correct answer for the displayed Japanese character.

Tests are quite simple to follow. Kana Test reveals a Japanese character in the main window and lets you pick the right answer from multiple choices. It is also able to show the correct answer in case you have chosen the wrong one and display information about the number of correct and wrong answers.

Statistics are kept for both Hiragana and Katakana tests, along with information about the test number, date, wrong answers, and number of questions.

We have tested Hiragana and Katakana on Windows 8.1 Pro and noticed that it carries out a task quickly. It leaves a minimal footprint on system resources so the overall performance of the computer is not hampered.

All things considered, Kana Test comes packed with basic features for helping you learn about Japanese characters, and comes in handy especially for users who are at the beginning of their studies.
