Select and Calculate

Windows comes with its own built-in scientific calculator that allows you to carry out your mathematical calculations. However, there are various other third-party applications that can act as calculators for mathematical expressions and one of them is Select and Calculate.

The advantage of Select and Calculate resides in the way it works, which makes it quite easy to calculate any math expression. As the name suggests, the application lets you determine the result of an expression by selecting it and pressing a key combination (as you will read below).

Once installed, a shortcut to Select and Calculate is placed on your desktop and the application is up and running. The configuration settings are shown at the first launch only, so that you can customize the hotkey and understand how the application works. After that, the application is sent to the system tray, unless you uncheck the option to minimize it in the dedicated “Options” menu.

While Select and Calculate is running in the background, you can select a mathematical expression in any basic editor, such as Notepad, and hit the two hotkeys one after another. This results in the replacement of the expression with its result (the default behavior of Select and Calculate), but you can also configure the application to copy the result to the clipboard instead.

Select and Calculate comes with support for various mathematical expressions, including basic ones (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, modulo, negation, and exponentiation), Boolean expressions, trigonometry-related and statistical functions, as well as a few others, such as sum, count, standard deviation, variance or absolute value.

Select and Calculate can determine the result of mathematical expression with a hotkey press, allowing you to perform calculations on the spot. And, since it runs in the system tray, it is definitely not intrusive, nor it interferes with your work.
