Despite decades of research, development and experience from releasing many iterations that improve upon earlier models, some electronics are still prone to malfunctions and errors, especially when mishandled by consumers. One example lies in the realm of laptop keyboards, which tend to be harder to take apart, clean and repair compared to their desktop counterparts.
Liquid damage in the form of spilled drinks or exaggerated amounts of disinfectants, along with physical impacts from dropping or placing heavy luggage on a laptop can damage its keyboard and render many, if not all, of its keys non-functional, which is where a handy program known as Keyboard Toogler comes into play, allowing you to fully deactivate the peripheral by disabling its PS/2 interfaced port number.
For maximum convenience, the application can be downloaded in three flavors, depending on your particular needs: portable for those with on-the-go USB flash-drive powered setups when switching between personal and work devices, installer-based for frequent use cases and script-based for experienced individuals who wish to customize its functionality.
When running the program as administrator, users are greeted to a straightforward Command Prompt-style console window from which one can enable or disable the internal keyboard by pressing the corresponding digit, thus removing the need for complex interfaces and menus to execute the app’s core function.
In order to circumvent possible errors, it may be useful to enable Windows’ virtual keyboard’s system tray shortcut to access important functions with the mouse if the user does not have an external USB or Bluetooth physical keyboard on the ready.
Whether your laptop keyboard suffers from ghosting issues, in which it fails to register one or two keys when pressing multiple ones concomitantly, or after an accidental spill half of the keys stop registering, disabling it lets you place a desktop version on top of it in order to still make use of the device – a solution that Keyboard Toogler provides with ease.
