Hummingbird

Even though most of us think that you have enough storage space to not bother with maintenance, somehow we end up filling that space rather quickly. The more space, the more careless we become about storage.

Hummingbird is a lightweight app that can come in handy for those times when we simply can’t decide what you can delete, as it provides an easy way to compress various files and folders.

The setup is straightforward, but the app is also available in a portable edition, so you don’t need to install it. The GUI is rather minimal, yet modern and intuitive, as all I had to do to get started is drag and drop a file over it.

The app automatically proceeds to compress it and, unfortunately, it replaces the original file in the source folder. While you can tell that a JS or CSS file has been compressed, as it generates a new file with .min, the same cannot be told about the other files and folders.

Remember to open the Settings and enable the Backup the original file before compression option. In my opinion, this option should be enabled by default, as not many have a tendency to go through the Settings first before using a file and hence, could lose important data.

You can preview the types of changes that happen with processing along with the app’s hotkeys from the Settings. On the other hand, you can’t really change much other than the compression rate for JPG and WEBP.

The developer mentions that you can use it for most of the standard formats, including HTML, GIF, PNG and SVG among others as well as folders. While for a single file, the operation took less than a second, keep in mind that Hummingbird may take longer with larger files.
