Chances are you want to keep all of your audio files organized on your computer, but File Explorer doesn’t really offer a neat list to view them, especially if they’re stored and grouped in individual folders. However, you can obtain a customized list of items with the help of Portable Lister.

As the name clearly points out, Portable Lister doesn’t take you through a setup process, and can be used from a USB flash drive just as well, in case you want to use it on other computers besides your own. On the bright side, this keeps the health status of the target PC intact, because registry entries are not modified during runtime.

You might have a little trouble understanding the initial variables of the application, since it stores all of its features in a simple, straightforward design, with little to no info on how the process goes. However, most fields are automatically filled, and you can try out a few configurations. Don’t worry, your media files remain intact.

The output file is always under the HTML format. The application relies on particular XML and XSL stylesheets, but it comes with a set of sample files to save you some effort. In case the initial build process fails, there’s the possibility to automate XML usage and creation. You can also choose to have the XML file deleted when done.

An XSL processor is required, which comes within the default set of features. There’s the possibility to set additional commands, which are explained in a dedicated section. The resulting HTML file can be easily included in your projects, with direct links to files.

Bottom line is that Portable Lister manages to neatly create a navigable, organized list of media items under various formats. Although there’s little customization involved, you can use a custom XML file for processing.
