µNote

Notepad isn’t what most people would call a complicated utility, but you don’t need a lot of features to write down a few quick notes. If you find that you need something even simpler than Notepad, you may wish to try out this program.

µNote is a very small, portable utility that lets you write down notes in the simplest way possible. It features a minimalistic UI with no buttons or menus, and it is controlled entirely with keyboard shortcuts.

When you launch the application for the first time, it will display a window where all the keyboard shortcuts are listed. You would do well to remember these or take a screenshot of the window, as it is only displayed again if you delete the INI configuration file.

You can use these hotkeys to create a new document, open an existing one, switch the interface theme or insert the current date.

One of the advantages of using µNote is that it is fully portable. It does not need to be installed before use, and it stores all of its data in a directory created in the program’s folder on the first launch. As a result, you can use it on the go with no issues.

While simplicity was clearly the top priority when developing µNote, it is nice to see that at least an alternative UI theme is included. If the bright white background is not very easy on the eyes, you can switch to the dark one by pressing Ctrl+T.

On the whole, µNote is exactly what you would expect – an incredibly simple text editor for users who just need to write down a few quick notes and, perhaps, even carry them around on a portable storage device.

Obviously, there are no advanced features to speak of, but this program does the job it was designed for without complicating things for no reason.
