It can be very useful to have a way to map keyboard input to other keys, a sequence of keys or mouse actions, as this can make certain repetitive tasks much easier, saving you both time and effort.
KeyCap is an open-source tool that provides with a simple solution for creating keybindings and macros. It is very simple to use, thanks to its minimalistic UI, and it can be minimized to the system tray while active.
First-time users should get the hang of things straight away. To create a binding, just enter the key in the input field and, optionally, check any modifiers that you wish to be used. The same goes for the output field, where you can also add mouse actions.
All the mappings you have created are listed in the main window, and you can enable them by just clicking the Start button. When active, the program’s other functions are temporarily disabled.
After creating a simple binding, you can append additional actions to have the application trigger a complex sequence when the key is pressed. You can even add delays, so the possibilities are nearly endless.
What’s more, the program allows you to create on/off toggle switches in order to initiate a hold with a keystroke and end it with another.
KeyCap does not require installation, so you can start using it instantly, and it is also possible to launch it from portable storage devices without leaving anything behind.
If you attempt to close the application while the mappings are active, it will be sent to the system tray. From here, you can toggle it on or off or shut down the program.
Overall, KeyCap is a great choice for users who need a straightforward and portable key mapping utility. It does the job, though it does look somewhat outdated, and is quite easy to use.
