Without denying that keeping your software solutions updated and having an antivirus considerably increases the security of your computer, sometimes you may need to take extra measures to protect the files on your computer, particularly if you have to leave it attended for extended periods.
SubCipher is a tiny program designed for users who prefer to create their own cipher codes for encrypting strings of text that contain letters, numbers or special characters.
Considering that this is a portable app, the setup is a quick and straightforward matter of decompressing the archive in the desired location on your hard drive. Upon launch, you are welcomed by clean and intuitive UI that consists of three panels, one of which being dedicated to creating the cipher sequence.
While in the upper section you can type of copy the desired string, in the lower panel you can view and copy the coded message. It is worth mentioning that you can modify the dictionaries' position with just one key (F8) and that the changes you make apply in real time.
The program comes with several cipher presets, namely ROT13, Atbash, Caesar3, Freq and Random. You should know that they are mostly focused on trading letters for letters in the cipher and they can work very well when you are trying to communicate critical information via a channel that is not secured.
If you want to make sure that the data is safe from the curious and the ill-intended, then you can consider using the generated string to create new ones. Alternatively, you can sort the substitution dictionary alphabetically using the top and bottom lines via the F6 and F7 keys.
Moreover, you should keep in mind that you can create your own cipher code by substituting the numbers, letters and special characters with others.
In the eventuality that you need to communicate critical data via unsecured networks or you solely prefer to keep the contents of your documents, database or spreadsheet safe from prying eyes, then perhaps SubCipher could come in handy.
What's new in SubCipher 1.3:
- Added: Content menu & keyboard options to load input text / save output text.
- Added: Context menu for dictionary textbox.
- Added: Controls to shift/rotate substitution dictionary (see context menu)
- Internal UI change; Removed SplitContainers. They're just too incompatible with DPI scaling. Control positioning is now manual.
