You can learn more about what you have stored on your computer by browsing its contents in a new way, and we don’t often think of which file extensions are the most common on our drives.

BrowseByExt is a small, portable tool designed for this very purpose. It shows you which extensions are the most prevalent, and it also enables you to filter them based on their extension.

When launching the application, you need to select the drive you wish to inspect from the drop-down list. The analysis shouldn’t take too long, but processing very large drives may be time-consuming.

After the analysis is done, you will see a list of all extensions in the left-hand panel, along with the number of files of each type. If you select one of the categories, all the discovered files will be displayed in the right-hand panel.

The path of every file that uses the selected extension will be displayed, along with its size and last modified date. You can sort them based on any of these parameters for easier browsing.

When you double-click an entry, the file will be opened in your default text editor. Unfortunately, there is no option to open them with the application that is associated with that particular extension.

In the end, BrowseByExt is a fairly basic piece of software, and it would help if some more features were added in future release. While it is interesting to see which extensions are the most prevalent on your drives, the application has few practical uses.

Nevertheless, it is worth appreciating just how easy the program is to deploy, as it does not need to be installed and can be run from any location instantly. It is also very responsive, and it features a minimalistic, intuitive UI.
