Generally speaking, whenever they want to test the source code they wrote or generated, developers rely on compilers. However, there are situations when an interpreter is preferable to a compiler, particularly since the errors are immediately displayed and corrected until the program is able to execute them properly.
Lectrote is a small application designed to analyze and interpret the same statements for various interactive games so that you can notice them easier and correct them right away.
Since the program is portable, it means you can run it as soon as you download it on your computer. Moreover, it does not require configuration, so you can get started by selecting the game file to play. Providing that you want to add to your code and make some configurations once the app is running, you can construct a bound game that enables users to at least play it.
Take note that the app enables you to play several games at the same time, but in separate windows. For convenience reasons, the position for each window is saved automatically and you can resume from the last session.
You will be happy to learn that the tool currently works with several types of games, including Glulx (Inform 7), as this relies on the Quixe interpreter. Nevertheless, you should be aware that the tool is not as fast as a native interpreter and that sound is not supported.
It is possible that the program works with other tools commonly used for developing interactive games, such as Z-code, Hugo or Ink. While the first relies on ZVM interpreters, for Hugo you do not have autosave, whereas for Ink there is no attempt to slow-print the output or hide the choice list.
Lectrote is a simple as it gets and provides you with a painless method to perform a quick analysis of the code so you can spot potential errors.
