While home users only deal with files as they are, programmers are also interested in the internal structure of files. A hex viewer such as FileAnalyzer enables one to have a look at the values and properties of a binary file, search for byte sequences and compare sections.
There is no need to go through an installation process, as the application is up and running as soon as you double-click on its executable.
The main window boasts different sections, each dedicated to exploring the structure of a file in detail. It is worth mentioning that FileAnalyzer can import not just a single executable, but also search for compatible files inside a folder. Thanks to the integrated filters and regex support, it can import matching files only.
While the file list is displayed in a panel, the others are dedicated to revealing the file structure, values, properties and the hex configuration. FileAnalyzer comes with support for various file formats, including containers (ISOBMFF, Matroska, TIFF, PE files, RealMedia files, OGG, ZIP), multimedia files, documents, archives, font files or executable files.
The hex structure is displayed even for files that are not compatible with FileAnalyzer. In other words, this application works as a hex viewer for any file type.
FileAnalyzer displays a file’s structure in tree view, revealing logical blocks of the file along with their size. For binary files, header data is shown. Clicking on any tree node populates the table of values and properties of the selected file chunk. Not only that it enables you to explore the keys and values in the file, but also check out their byte offset, size and type.
The integrated hex viewer enables you to explore the bytes and the file parts of the entire file. The application highlights the section that corresponds to the selected value or property.
Thanks to the integrated search tool, you can search for a byte sequence, a string, a property or a number inside the file structure, specific keys or values. Comparing files is also possible with FileAnalyzer. To compare specific values or properties across all the opened files, simply select it and right-click on the node.
FileAnalyzer enables you to get an up-close look of a file’s structure and helps you understand how values, properties and file chunks are stored at byte level. It allows you to explore the structrue of a file, carry out byte-level searches and run file chunk comparisons.
While it may successfully play the role of a hex and structure viewer, note that it is not a hex editor, so modifying the values and properties of a file is not currently possible.
