Container Desktop

The advent of the concept of containers in software development has meant that users were now able to package their software into standardized units, for development, shipment, and deployment. The outcome yielding into a more efficient workflow and integrations. Applications such as Docker Desktop have then facilitated the deployment of such software packages, by ensuring that the applications can run the same, regardless of the infrastructure, being isolated from the outer environment.

Container Desktop was created as an open-source alternative to the Docker environment and will enable users to build, push, pull and run Linux containers on the Windows operating system. The main working principle involves integration with the Docker Engine Community Edition, which is running on a Windows Subsystem for Linux.

The end-user experience results from bundling the open-source and compose Docker clients and the dedicated Proxy component handles the communication with the Docker Engine it enables a native docker experience on Windows, where it performs a direct translation of Windows Paths to WSL2 paths, localized for the Container Desktop distribution.

Last but not least, the dedicated tray area application will allow one to manage the container’s behavior, with controls for starting, stopping, and restarting the proxy service accordingly.
