Property Edit

Property Edit is a feather-light and portable application designed to help you inspect PE files and find out valuable information, such as attributes, colors and headers. It offers support for executables (EXEs), libraries (DLLs), packages (BPLs, DPLs) and ActiveX controls (OCXs).

Before proceeding any further, you should know that Property Edit hasn't been updated for a long time, so you may experience stability issues on newer Windows.

As there is not setup pack involved, you can extract the program files to any part of the hard disk or on a pen drive, and just click the executable file to launch it on any computer effortlessly. It doesn't change OS registry settings.

It's wrapped up in a user-friendly interface that doesn't put emphasis on appearance but has a neatly organized structure. You can separately access tabs to view information on attributes, Delphi-VCL, colors, links, and PE.

You can get started by indicating the file you want to examine and investigate details surrounding the MS-DOS header (e.g. bytes on last page, total pages, relocations), PE header (e.g. number of sections and symbols, characteristics), PE optional header (e.g. size of code, major linker version, section alignment), along with imported and exported libraries (if any).

Property Edit also lets you view attributes, such as caption text, class name, app instance and handle history along with the the control's author and package, extract icons and save them to file, check out Delphi-VCL (e.g. component, font, parent, owner) and colors (e.g. web, decimal, hexadecimal, zoom factor), as well as search for target links.

As expected, the utility didn't hog system resources in our tests, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly. It didn't hang, crash or prompt error messages. Too bad that it hasn't been updated for a long time, though. Otherwise, Property Edit is quite useful in examining many technical details behind Windows PE files.
