Developers who want to create their own desktop applications for Windows have different platforms and frameworks at their disposal. Some features and APIs can only be used on certain platforms. The Windows App SDK brings to the table a collection of components that can aid in the development of Windows apps. It delivers the next generation of tools for programmers and developers, a broad and organized set of APIs and other instruments that can be used with apps running on Windows 11 down to version 1809 of Windows 10.
It is worth mentioning that the Windows App SDK is not a replacement for the Windows 10 SDK, nor it replaces the well-known Windows app types (.NET, Windows Forms, WPF, C++). Instead, it offers a set of APIs and tools to help developers regardless of the platform they are using.
The Windows App SDK package features an extension for Visual Studio 2019, along with a few templates to help you get started. The libraries are delivered via a NuGet package that can be easily deployed in new projects.
The Windows App SDK features version adaptive code, but keep in mind that, as long as the user is running Windows 11 down to version 1809 of Windows 10, all the new features and APIs in the Windows App SDK can be used as soon as they are released. Moreover, since Windows APIs are not tied to the OS release anymore, updates to the Windows App SDK will be released more often. In other words, developers will be able to enjoy innovative features and the latest features in the Windows development platforms as soon as they are released by Microsoft.
What's new in Windows App SDK 1.5.2:
- Feed providers are now able to show announcements in the Widgets Dashboard:
- The new FeedManager.TryShowAnnouncement API allows a Feed Provider to request that the Widget Dashboard show their announcements. To show your announcement, create a FeedAnnouncement object and call the FeedManager.TryShowAnnouncement API.
- Feed announcements will have their own badges displayed in the taskbar that can be customized using the FeedAnnouncement API.
- Feed providers can now opt in to receive Analytics and Error Reports information about their provider as a user interacts with it. To opt in, implement the IFeedProviderAnalytics and/or IFeedProviderErrors interfaces by your provider.
