There is no doubt that watching helplessly how your computer is taken over by a ransomware is terrifying. More so when you are given a deadline to make the payment so as to avoid permanent data loss. Well, that is what the Jigsaw ransomware does.
Based on the plot of the popular horror movie, Saw, Jigsaw encrypts files using the AES-128 algorithm and appends them various extensions (“fun”, “game”, “payransom”), while also displaying a countdown to determine you to send the requested amount of money and avoid file deletion. Some variants (and there are many, due to the release of the source code back in 2016) even punish actions such as system rebooting or the termination of the ransomware’s processes by instantly deleting a significant number of files.
Important developers in the cybersecurity field have created tools to help victims of the ransomware and one of them is the Emsisoft Decryptor for Jigsaw.
Before you run the decryptor, please keep in mind that you must end the processes of Firefox and Dropbox and deselect their startup items in the Task Manager. This is due to the fact that the initial variant of Jigsaw was spread as a Dropbox or Firefox update. You should quarantine the infected files using a reliable antivirus solution to avoid repeated file encryption attempts.
Once you do so, the decryptor can be used to try unlocking your files. By default, the list of target locations includes all the connected drives but you can also add paths of your choice.
Since it is a cost-free service and there are so many variants of the ransomware, Emsisoft cannot guarantee that the decrypted content will be identical to the original or that the decryption process will not fail. You are advised to preserve the encrypted files on your computer, as suggested in the Options tab.
You can monitor the progress of the decryption in the Results tab and save the log file locally or copy it directly to the clipboard if you need to paste it elsewhere.
While Emsisoft Decryptor for Jigsaw does not guarantee it will work in all cases, the alternative of paying the ransom does not offer any assurance either, so it is definitely worth a try, especially since it comes at no cost.
